Learning a foreign language

Studying at a university level is challenging. Learning outside of your native language adds one more layer to an already complex situation. Yet it is incredibly doable!  Here are some great steps to help yourself master learning in another language.

  1. Surround Yourself with the Language: Immerse yourself in environments where the target language is spoken. Speak the language of the country you are currently living in with all the people you interact with.  This might be challenging but persistent.  The more effort you put forth to speak in this language the quicker you will feel comfortable with the language. This will give you great practice to speak common conversations and hear more words.  It will expand your fluency and your pronunciation.

  2. Set Realistic Goals: Start with achievable goals, start small but gradually increase the difficulty as you become more comfortable with the language. Be patient and persistent with learning. Remember progress will come in all different increments.  Continuing to learn daily will provide you to make great strides as the days turn into weeks.

  3. Engage with Media: Watch television shows or movies, YouTube videos or lectures in the new language. Listen to radio stations and podcasts. This helps with understanding different accents and colloquial expressions. Read books, newspapers, and magazines to help learn the written form of the language. Start with simpler texts and gradually move to more complex material.

  4. Immerse in Cultural Experiences: Participate in cultural activities related to the language. This could be cooking traditional dishes, attending cultural events, or learning about the country’s history and customs.

By integrating these strategies into your daily routine, you can enhance your immersion experience and make significant strides in learning in a

different language than your native tongue.
